Requirements

* wetsuit

* pressure affected items

* safety equipment

* backup air/ side mount

Performance Requirements

Remember, not everything is like local diving.
There are other destinations, and applications for deep diving.

Being aware of all of the kinds of safety, and activities and applying that knowledge under water makes  you a better diver elsewhere.

Don't set records.

It is popular to brag about how deep you've gone. That's not actually impressive. What's impressive is self-awareness.

Factors to Consider

  • Dive times are shorter

  • Narcosis happens far faster at 100+ feet / What is narcosis?

  •

Depth Limits

  • Environmental Conditions

  • Psycological and physical well-being

  • Which dive is this today? (look at your dive computer for loads)

  • Distance to Emergency Safety (deeeeeep / emobisms etc)

  • Training, experience, dive partners

Gear

  • Regulator - Reliable, Serviced (at sea, rinse often)

  • SPG - Same

  • Surface Buoy

Surface Support Station

  • Overlooked, underused, helpful - Shore and surface

    • Extra weights

    • Air Tank with regulator

    • Safe place to ascend

Other Considerations

image.png
  • Short line held to maintain contact in unsual or low vis deep dives

  • Stay Close to each other regardless

  • Frog Kick

  • Neutral Buoyancy

Ascent

  • Heads up ascent is standard teaching

  • Horizontal ascent is for those with excellent buoyancy, and has its own benefifits like more control of bcd, and ability to redirect directions etc

    • * Padi says : Horizontal optimal, but any thing comfortable

  • 1 foot per second

Safety Stops

  • 100 feet or deeper - required

  • Computer says so

EMERGENCY DECO STOP

* Exceed deco limit by more than 5 minutes = 5 minute stop / follow computer (6hr SI)

* Exceed deco limit by less than 5 minutes - 8 minute stop / follow computer (24hr SI)

MISS SAFFETY STOP

* Watch for ISSUES

* What are symptoms?

NARCOSIS and DECO ILLNESS

  • Narcosis needs to be recognized

  • Hand signal for narcosis?

  • Fix it by ascending / doesn't end dive

DCO Ill Symptoms

  1. Pain in limbs / joints, pain can move

  2. Skin Is very itchy

  3. Numbness / tingling / paralysis

  4. Shortness of breath

  5. Dizziness (some of these are due to suit squeeze at depth)

Signs of DCI

  1. Favoring an arm or leg

  2. Paraylysis

  3. Stumbling/staggering

  4. Unconsiousness

  5. Colllapse

  6. Coughing Spasms
